What causes a soggy yard
Many South East Queensland yards sit on heavy clay. Clay holds water and drains slowly, so after a wet week the lawn stays soft and puddles stay put. Sloping blocks send groundwater towards the house. Retaining walls without drainage hold water behind them.
How a subsoil drain works
A trench is dug along the wet area or behind a wall. A slotted pipe wrapped in filter fabric is laid in gravel, which draws water out of the surrounding soil. The pipe carries it, with steady fall, to the stormwater system. The trench is backfilled and the surface reinstated.
Signs you need one
- Lawn that squelches days after rain
- Water seeping out at the base of a retaining wall
- Damp or mould under a highset house
- Paths and slabs that crack and lift as the ground swells
- A pool surround that stays wet
Before we dig
We check where the water is coming from and where it can lawfully go. Sometimes the cause is a broken stormwater pipe or a downpipe emptying onto the ground, which is a smaller fix. If subsoil drainage is the answer, the quote states the length of the run, where it connects and how the surface is left.
