Overflow relief gully repaired and reset in concrete

A sewer overflow relief gully set in a concrete path was dug out, rebuilt with new 100 mm PVC pipe and reinstated with the correct falls.

The problem

The sewer overflow relief gully (ORG) beside this Worongary home needed repairing. It sat in the concrete path against the house, so the slab had to be opened up to get to the pipe underneath.

What we did

  • Jackhammered out the concrete slab around the gully
  • Disconnected the existing PVC pipe
  • Installed new 100 mm PVC pipe with a new socket and junction
  • Reinstated the gully with the correct falls
  • Added drainage gravel around the new fitting
  • Replaced the concrete slab and removed the excavation waste

Why it matters

An overflow relief gully is the grated outlet on the sewer line outside the house. If the sewer ever blocks, sewage should spill out there, outside, instead of backing up through a shower or toilet inside. That only works if the gully is in good condition and set at the right height with the right falls.

A damaged gully is easy to ignore because it sits quietly in a path, but it is the part of the system that protects the inside of the house when something goes wrong further down the line.
